I suspect
There is nothing special about "the gods".
They are just bigger Stuff.
They are not "Divine", "Absolute", "Lordly", "Infinite" nor "Almighty"...
With all things they are Equal, in that, they are made out of the same stuff as everything else...
There is equally always something "bigger" than they.
Everything they are, they have bequeathed to kings, queens, religions, governments, politicians & law-enforcements...
In otherwords, they are simply ass-holes deserving to be assassinated, strung-up on meat hooks, & trampled upon...
The Big Secret is that they inadvertently created something more durable & powerful than theirselves:
